In September 2023, I took on the role of Jenna in ‘Colder Than Here’ by Laura Wade for my acting course showcase and it was a brilliant challenge! It’s a poignant story that grapples with themes of morality, family’s dynamics and the weight of impending loss when Myra, mother and rock of the family, navigates a terminal illness. She prepares for her final moments as her family members have to navigate their individual emotional struggles in a revealing and vulnerable play. The writing balances humour and sadness really well as it explores how people can relate to life and loss.

Guided and directed by Brian Timoney, I was able to explore the true depth of Jenna, the younger of the two daughters, in order to embody her. Jenna is such a complex character – she is the “dysfunctional” and “rebellious” sibling riddled with insecurities. She is constantly in a state of hiding but the defenses she’s put up just can’t remain when she comes face to face with her mother’s inevitable passing.

This role gave me a fun opportunity to delve into very complex emotional territory and though the rehearsal process was challenging, it was also really rewarding! Ultimately, this experience not only deepened my appreciation for Laura Wade’s writing, but it gave me a great chance to explore and stretch my range as an actor.
