In November 2023, I got the amazing chance to take on the lead role in ‘Self Portrait’, a black-and-white silent short film written and directed by Antía Fatas. I loved working with her and her team to bring to life a story that highlights the tough choices artists experience, as they navigate their need for survival while grappling with their values and ethics in a competitive world through a moral dilemma my character, Molly, faces.
Another super fun aspect of this project was that it was film shot on a 40 year old film camera! Due to the amount of film available, we were limited to only 2 or 3 takes on average for each shot – the filming felt playful, natural and uncomplicated thanks to strong training and my background in theatre in which there are no retakes. Following careful camera rehearsals, we were able to get the majority of shots in just one take, with a second one occasionally done for safety.
This film was a total joy to be a part of, especially as it relies on a natural and subtle internal struggle (my favourite!) with absolutely zero dialogue.
